Healthcare Named Most Violent Industry

A recent article released in the Journal of Clinical Nursing has revealed the healthcare industry to be potentially the most violent industry to work in. The study surveyed 365 doctors and nurses working in the emergency department which revealed that within the past 12 months, 76.2% of the participants experienced violence in the workplace, although the vast majority (88.8%) was not physical, but verbal abuse. The study also revealed that it was not necessarily the patients that are the source of violence directed at

Nurses and Inflight Emergencies

A recent incident involving a physician is a medical emergency whilst onboard a passenger flight in the USA has raised some questions about the ethics surrounding assisting fellow passengers whilst traveling. The incident in question happened in October 2016 when a 28-year-old OB/GYN resident from Houston offered her medical expertise in dealing with a medical emergency on board the flight she was traveling on. According to the New York Times, this offer was rejected by the flight attendant as they were not satisfied she…

Holistic Nursing Care

Over the last decade or so, health care has shifted focus from treatment of symptoms and disease processes, to more emphasis on prevention of disease, such as living an active lifestyle and exercising regularly. Healthy diet and personal habits have also seen an increased emphasis in recent health promotion campaigns. Through these new approaches modern medicine has slowly moved away from the biomedical model as its sole foundation, and has moved towards a more holistic approach to healthcare, while using the solid…

An Introduction to Nursing

Nursing is a broad profession within the healthcare system, which deals with the caring and support of sick is injured people, promoting recovery and wellbeing. Nursing is often what we envision when we think about hospitals and healthcare in general. The caring nurse with her gentle touch and soft voice is what we all think would best aid in our recovery, and indeed this has been shown to be the case on many occasions. Nurses focus not only on supporting individuals in need, but rather focus their skills…

You Only Get One Chance

We only get one chance to set our standard of care I remember when I was just a beginning student nurse, the facility manager for my first placement sat down with me and the other 3 students on placement with me and introduced us to not only the facility, but also how aged care works, and how to be a good nurse in general. One of the most important things he said has stuck with me ever since that day, and it pops into my head every time I encounter questionable practices in my nursing work. He said that we only get…

The First Weeks of Nursing School

I’m into my fourth week of nursing school and so far I’m absolutely loving it. I find myself almost sad to be heading home at the end of the day, as well as constantly craving more knowledge. For the first time in my study life, I actually find myself reading the text books religiously, even when it's not even required. I find myself occupying my spare time with… strangely enough… more studying. It’s like I need to keep learning as much as I can. While it seems unusual I’m sure I’m going to look back on this in a few…

Am I Supposed to Be here?

So it's the first day of the new semester and so far it's not going so well. First I managed to catch the wrong bus, but it's all good, I still managed to get to uni on time, a good 45 minutes before my first lecture is set to start. So feeling excited and refreshed by the smelter break, I decided to rock up nice and early and secure a prime position in the lecture hall. I grab some breakfast from the vending machine (a succulent mars bar), plow through it and double check the lecture hall on my timetable. Yup, I'm in…

How to Handle a Brain

Yesterday was certainly an interesting day. I only had one class, Bioscience, but it was an incredible experience nonetheless. I should warn any of you that are a little squeamish; you might want to skip over this one. I started out on Tuesday night not feeling all too well and contemplating not attending the practical class the next day, but only due to a quiz at the end of the class worth a mere 3% (I know it's not much but every mark is a good mark, right?) I decided it would be best for me to attend. It turned out to…

The First Nursing Exam

I’m sure many of you know the feeling, you cram in any study you can into any spare second of the day, cramming as much as you can. You stay up late studying, getting as little sleep every night as you dare to get away with. You rock up at Uni on the day feeling confident, tired, but confident nonetheless. You get in there and you’re pumped! You totally got this. You’ve studied everything you could get your hands on. This is it… exam time, you psych yourself up. You get the exam paper, it's a little thicker than you…
